Chesterfield County Museum and Magnolia Grange Tours

All programs are $2 per students, and chaperones are free. All programs meet the Virginia State Education Department standards. For more information, call (804) 796-7121.

General Museum Tour (all ages)
This program explores the many changes that have transformed Chesterfield County. Discover the many firsts of Chesterfield County. From the first commercially mined coal and iron production to the first railroad and paved road in Virginia, the county has a unique past filled with firsts for the New World and Virginia. This tour offers a wonderful introductory video of Chesterfield County and showcases a newly updated, permanent exhibit focusing on 400 years of history.

Past and Present: Settling a New Land (Grades K-2)
Designed for younger students, this tour provides a better understanding of how life has changed over 400 years. It provides a glimpse into the lives of the first settlers by looking at the relationship between the Europeans and Virginia Indians. Using artifacts and hands-on reproductions, children will be able to appreciate a comparison of life from the 17th century into the present day. This program incorporates a reproduction of a General Store, allowing students to experience early 20th-century Chesterfield County commerce.

Explorers, Citizens and Soldiers: Life in the New World (Grades 3-4)
This program emphasizes the settlement of Virginia, focusing on the creation of the first settlements at Jamestown and the Citie of Henricus. It also highlights the significant individuals who played a prominent role in this endeavor. This tour incorporates science and math concepts, and concentrates on the importance of industry in Chesterfield County, mainly the local production of iron and coal. Additionally, the tour features Chesterfield's military significance during the Revolutionary and American Civil wars.

Plantation Life (Grades K-4)
This program examines life in Chesterfield County during the 19th century by allowing students to experience how families lived and survived. Students will have the chance to observe common household items and compare them to their modern-day equivalents.

Henricus Historical Park Educational Opportunities

All programs are $4 per student per program (Chesterfield and Henrico public-school students are $3 per student per program). For an optional History Kids make-and-take craft, add $1.50 per child.  Please call for outreach program fees. For more information, call (804) 748-1613.

Henricus Historical Park provides multicurricular programs aligned to the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) guidelines for pre-K-8 grades. These programs emphasize the tactile learning style by using age-appropriate and multicurricular hands-on group activities. 

Onsite Programs at Henricus Historical Park:

History Kids (Grades pre-K-K)
This program emphasizes childhood skills of the 17th century. Children participate in hands-on children’s chores, folktales and games. The choice of themes are Indian children or English children. A make-and-take craft option is available after the program, an art project relating to the tour theme.

People of the River: The Powhatan Indians (Grades 1-5)
Tour Arrohateck, a re-created Virginia Indian village, to experience the 17th-century Powhatan Indian culture. Experience the Powhatans’ technology, customs in farming, food preparation and cultural activities.

Success of the Citie: English Citie of Henricus 1611-22 (Grades 1-5)
Interact with and learn about the life and hardships of early English settlers in the recreated Citie and plantation. The program focuses on the importance of tobacco farming, trade, defense and problem-solving techniques of the 17th century. Government, civics, technology and economics are covered in this hands-on program.

Mapping the James River (Grades 1-5)
Understand the environment, people, places, economics and history of the James River area from both a two- and three-dimensional format through the use of maps and hands-on activities. Basic mapping skills will be coordinated with a team-building project. This program is also available as an outreach program.

Two Cultures: Comparing and Contrasting Cultures in Contact (Grades 4-5)
Compare and contrast life in 17th-century Virginia through both the Indian and English cultures.  Explore the settlers’ struggles for a new way of life within their environment and their early interactions with the native Powhatan Indians.

Voyage to Virginia (Grades 4-6)
Visit both Agecroft Hall and Henricus Historical Park to discover the differences between life during the early 17th century in England and the Virginia colonies. Learn about the lifestyles of the English servant class at Agecroft Hall then travel to Virginia’s new colony of Henricus as indentured servants hoping to improve their lives. Learn to live within the New World through interactions with the native Indians, building a community and developing an economy.
Four-hour program

People and Environment (Grades 6-9)
From the archaeological record and historical records and maps, what do we know about how the geography and environment of Virginia contributed to the economic, social, scientific and political lives of both native and Colonial Virginians? Compare and contrast how two different cultures developed and interacted within the same physical environment.

Outreach Programs at Your School
While most of the programs are held outdoors at our site, we also have available Outreach programs held at your school. Please note that multiple programs can be booked to run consecutively to enhance your SOL experience. 

Powhatan Indians (Grades 1-5)
Learn how the environment affects people’s basic needs to live and to live together through this hands-on, team-building, problem-solving program about the Powhatan Indians of 17th-century Virginia.
One-hour program

Surviving the 17th Century (Grades 1-5)
Using a hands-on, problem-solving, team-building approach, students will explore how the English settlers in Virginia managed to survive in a challenging environment and create a new home at Henricus.

Virginia Governments of the 17th Century (Grades 6-8)
Interact with the earliest phases of Virginia government – the social duties, civic action, communal needs and economic systems of the 17th century. See how early Colonial inhabitants worked within their new environment to develop the earliest forms of American government.
